الإسلام هو نظام حياة متكامل
Pearls Of WisdomWeekly new topics that will help provide the foundation of how Islam Is The Complete Way of Life from the ayahs (Verses) of the Qur’an and understanding the traditions (Sunnah) and biography (Seerah) of our beloved Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم

FASTING DAY OF ASHOORA

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Fasting the day of ‘Arafah I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.” Narrated by Muslim, 1162.

This is by the bounty that Allaah bestows upon us, whereby fasting one day expiates for the sins of a whole year. And Allaah is the Owner of great bounty.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to be very keen to make sure he fasted on the day of ‘Ashoora’ because of its great status.

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so keen to make sure he fasted any day and preferring it over another except this day, the day of ‘Ashoora’, and this month – meaning Ramadaan. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1867.

With regard to the reason why the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted on the day of ‘Ashoora’ and urged the people to do likewise is mentioned in the hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari (1865) from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashoora’. He said, “What is this?” They said, “This is a good day, this is the day when Allaah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Moosa fasted on this day.” He said, “We are closer to Moosa than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast.

‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted on the day of ‘Ashoora and told the people to fast, they said, “O Messenger of Allaah, this is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Next year, if Allaah wills, we will fast on the ninth day.” But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had passed away.

Narrated by Muslim, 1916.

Al-Shaafa’i and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaaq and others said: It is mustahabb [recommended] to fast both the ninth and the tenth, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted the tenth and intended to fast the ninth.

Based on this, there are different ways of fasting ‘Ashoora’, the least of which is to fast the tenth only, but it is better to fast the ninth as well. The more one fasts in Muharram, the better.

About The Seminar
Every family faces its own set of unique challenges especially a Muslim family trying to find a balance between modern day life, social changes, technological developments and implementation of Islam in between all these factors. “The Ideal Muslim Home” is an essential seminar which combines Fiqh, Adab, Tafseer and practical advice governing family relations and solutions to problems between parents, children, siblings, spouses and in-laws derived from the Quran and the Sunnah as well as the lives of the righteous predecessors..

Why This Seminar
The Prophet (sullallahu alayhi wa-sallam) said: The best of you is the one who is best towards his family. As for me, I am best amongst you towards my family (Ibn Majah). The orthodox family dynamics are changing with lack of bonding and lack of communication at the centre of the issue. In an effort to address this vast topic Kalemah has invited Sheikh Sajid Umar on a half day seminar to divulge the secrets of an Ideal Muslim home using the premise of the life and trials in the household of Prophet Ibrahim alaihisalam to help strengthen our families and in turn our communities.

Planning the First 10 Days of Dhul-Hijjah (download printable Dhul-Hijjah Planner)

The month of Dhul- Hijjah is approaching us soon inshaAllah. In this month are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days.” The people asked, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah?” He said, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allaah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 2/457).

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah also include the Day of Arafat, on which Allaah perfected His Religion. Fasting on this day will expiate for the sins of 2 years.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah.

It is also Sunnah to say Takbeer (“Allaahu akbar”), Tahmeed (“Al-hamdu Lillaah”), Tahleel (“La ilaha ill-Allaah”) and Tasbeeh (“Subhaan Allaah”) during the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, and to say it loudly in the mosque, the home, the street and every place where it is permitted to remember Allaah and mention His name out loud, as an act of worship and as a proclamation of the greatness of Allaah, may He be exalted. Men should recite these phrases out loud, and women should recite them quietly.

It is important for us to use these ten days to come closer to Allah swt through our acts of worship and sincere repentance. We must use this time to correct our mistakes and improve ourselves as Muslims.

These special ten days will pass by us very quickly. It may be beneficial and more productive if we plan ahead. Download this printable “Dhul Hijjah Planner ” where you can write goals on how you would like to spend the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

May Allaah swt help and guide us all. May Allaah help us to benefit from these ten days.
